Farmhouse on the Cane located just outside of Burnsville NC is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains which is part of the Great Smokies with breathtaking views and natural scenic landscapes.
No matter where you travel in Yancey County, North Carolina, the naturally inspiring beauty of our mountains is close by. With the highest average elevation of any county in North Carolina, we are home to six of the tallest peaks east of the Mississippi, including the highest, Mount Mitchell.
Bordered by the Blue Ridge Parkway to the southeast and the Appalachian Trail to the northwest, the area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From lush forest lands to tumbling rivers, Yancey County provides countless opportunities for outdoor adventures. You’ll also discover working art and craft studios and art galleries tucked throughout our scenic mountains.
Roan Mountain is another beautiful area which has great hiking and hosts the Rhododendron Festival every year.

Farmhouse on the Cane is glorious patch of paradise nestled deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains on 18 acres and only a few minutes from historic Burnsville, North Carolina. The crystal waters of the famous Cane River flow wide and sweet just steps away from our front door and along 1/2 mile of our property.
Originally built in the early 1920's, Farmhouse on the Cane has been fully restored to it's original majestic nature. This rustic jewel is truly a home away from home.
A day at Farmhouse
Whatever you fancy, Farmhouse has many activities for all to enjoy. Take a leisurely stroll down a picturesque path that borders the river, or grab a fishing pole and catch some fresh water trout*. Tubing, rafting, and swimming in clear fresh mountain waters are also a great way to cool off and just relax. Mount Mitchell and the Blue Ridge Parkway is only ten miles away as the crow flies...

Farmhouse on the Cane is located directly along the Cane River in Yancey County just outside of Burnsville NC.
Favorite river activities include swimming, tubing, fishing and it there is a big rain even Kayaking.
Brook, Rainbow and Brown Trout in headwater streams, in additional to Smallmouth Bass make Yancey County a fishing destination.
A fishing license is required from the State of North Carolina.
There are many creeks and rivers ideal for fishing throughout the County. For fishing and hunting supplies be sure to visit Prices Creek Store.
Rivers Edge Outfitters and Stonefly Outfitters are local expert and has several day trips and fishing lessons available.
Tubing and swimming is also a ton of fun.
In addition to the Cane River, Loafer's Glory Tubing and Rafting offers organized tubing trips and rafting on the Toe River.
The Cane River is located steps from your front door.

Cool off and lounge all day in the Cane River.
Western North Carolina is a mecca for small farms and home gardens. As you drive through the countryside, you may run into chickens crossing the road and residents enjoying the evening in their garden.
One of our favorite events is the local ASAP farm tour. The farmers open their gates to the public for tours and hands-on experiences.
There are many Small Farmers in the Yancey County area. Be sure to check out the list for those that sell to the public or offer tours.
Hickory Nut Gap Farm is another one of our favorite farms located about 40 minutes away and is open to the public. Be sure to bring your lunch and sit a spell in the Apple Orchard. They have a few picnic tables for visitors.
If you like to pick your own harvest. Click on the link for a list of pick-your-own farms. We love the fresh berries during the summer and apples during the fall.

Located about halfway between Asheville and Boone, Burnsville NC is nestled among 19 of the highest mountains in the east. Nearby Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 feet, is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, and it is accompanied by 18 other peaks over 6,300 feet. The county seat of Yancey County, Burnsville was established in 1833, and has as many artisans and crafts persons per capita as any town in the United States, with nearly 400 full-time and 200 part-time residing in Yancey County. One of the wonderful traditions of the county is the work being done by quilters, basket makers, and other traditional crafts persons and artists. Burnsville is also home to the Yancey County Farmers' Market, one of the oldest and largest tailgate markets in western North Carolina, held on Saturday mornings behind the Burnsville Town Center.
The major festival is the Mount Mitchell Craft Fair, held every August on the beautiful town square of Burnsville. This great arts and crafts festival is one of the longest running in the mountains and has been held for over 50 years. Burnsville is also home to the historic Nu Wray Inn, also located on the town square.

If you are like us, we love to visit great restaurants and artisan shops for interesting and delicious fresh foods. Western North Carolina has outstanding and unique restaurants.
Dinner:
Among our favorites for dinner in Asheville are Modesto and Limones. Oh and Curate.
Lunch:
For lunch in Asheville you must try 12 Bones or Mellow Mushroom. 12 Bones is an Obama favorite and Mellow Mushroom is very colorful pizza joint.
Breakfast:
Our Asheville breakfast favorites include Laughing Seed Cafe or King Daddy's Chicken and Waffles as well as Tupelo Honey Cafe.
Laughing Seed only serves on Sunday but be sure to check their website.
Dessert:
Our all time favorite dessert locations are the Chocolate Lounge and the Nightbell.
Other favorites include The Lobster Trap and Grove Park Inn.
We often have dinner and then take a walk over to the Chocolate Lounge for our favorite chocolate treat with a glass of red wine. Perfect way to end the evening.
If you like tea, this is a really cool hip place, Dobra Tea. Be prepared to take off your shoes and sit on cushions.
If you would like to venture over to Boone, please do try the Gamekeeper but be sure to call ahead and make a reservation. Be open to trying some different types of food such as Ostrich or Snake. All are very tasty.
A Spruce Pine favorite is Knife and Fork but again be sure to call ahead.
Burnsville restaurants include Bubbas, Teos, Garden Deli, Ye Old Country Store for lunch and Pig and Grits.
If you love Southern Family Style dining, be sure to visit either the Farmers' Daughter in Chucky Tn or the Daniel Boone Inn in Boone NC.
Chucky TN is a good 1 1/2 hour drive but along the way is some beautiful views and great farm stands. Great outing or Sundays.
Be sure to explore the WNC Cheese Trail. Take a day trip and visit Asheville area creameries. Be sure to pack your favorite bread, wine and deli meats and a blanket for your picnic.
We are very proud of our two excellent local creameries, Oakmoon Farm and Creamery and Mountain Farm. Be sure to check out their websites for hours and events. Their products are amazing and you will love their passion.
Asheville is know for beer and farm fresh food but there are a couple really great Chocolate shops. Chocolate Lounge and Chocolate Fetish as well worth visiting.

Our number one question for Fall is "when is the peak color"? Elevation in western North Carolina varies so there is usually an area that is peaking while the lower mountain ranges are following behind a few days or even a week.
Western North Carolina has one of the longest color shows in the country during the Fall season. It is truly a spectacular experience.
Winter in Western North Carolina is also beautiful. It is a slower time when you will find mostly locals going about their daily lives. Gone are the summer crowds and fall leaf lookers. Snow skiing near Asheville and Boone and weekend trips for your Christmas tree selection are popular activities.
After the winter months, Spring brings an awakening of the massive canopy of the trees and flowers in Western North Carolina.
Drive the country roads and you will see the small farmers start to till the land and get ready for their planting.
Favorite summer pastimes include tubing in the fresh rivers, campfires and fishing.
Hiking trails ranging from easy "walks" to advanced technical climbing can be found in the Black Mountains and Toe River Valley near Burnsville, North Carolina. The area has a wide variety of terrain to explore ranging from lush river valleys to majestic mountain ridges. At 6,684 foot elevation, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Numerous trails, including the spectacular and challenging Black Mountain Crest Trail, can be accessed from Mount Mitchell State Park located on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association offers several guided hikes through the year.
The Cane River is located just a few steps away from the Farmhouse. Take a dip, swim or grab a tube and relax in the water.
There are a couple great waterfall excursions in Yancey County NC. Some of our favorites are Roaring Forks, Crabtree Falls, and Setrock Falls.
Linville Falls is located off the Blue Ridge Parkway and makes a good day trip.
